Introductions
Now that finals and the accompanying celebrations are over, I’d like to introduce myself as one of the Student Ambassador Interns with the Admissions office. I work with the admissions officers to reach out to prospective students; we thought this blog would be a great way to highlight real, student perspectives. To that end, let me tell you a little about where I’m coming from : )
I’m Karen, a second-year Rady Full-Time MBA student focusing on marketing. I’m a young student: I came to Rady right out of undergrad. I’ve lived in San Diego since 2001 and I earned a BS in Business Administration, Marketing from San Diego State. I thought about leaving the area for my MBA, but when I visited the campus for an info session; heard about the curriculum from diverse, interesting students; and saw the view from the student lounge balcony, Rady quickly shot to the top of my list.
Since I’ve been here, I’ve discovered the value of getting involved. Casual, club-sponsored, and career-oriented social events keep everyone’s schedules from running low, but I can’t recommend further involvement enough. I’m the Rady School’s representative to UCSD’s Graduate Student Association, co-Editor-in-Chief of the Rady Business Journal, and I fill leadership roles of varying responsibility for the Ethics Committee, CACI conference, and Board Fellows. I’ve gotten so much value out of working with my peers who’ve come from different industries, varying stages of life and cities all over the world.
I’m looking into consumer technology companies first, mostly because I enjoyed my internship so much. I spent 9 weeks this summer in South Korea interning for Samsung and thoroughly enjoying the adventure.
I’m happy to answer your questions on a one-on-one basis, email me at karen.boyd@rady.ucsd.edu. If you’d like a more detailed view of my life as a Rady applicant and student, San Diegan, and Samsung Intern, my personal blog is here. Again, feel free to email me! I’ll be sure to address frequently asked questions as topics on the blog, too. I should point out that, since I work for the Admissions Office, I can’t read your essays, as much as I’d like to : )
Hello Winter Break
The Rady full-time 2012 class finished its last final yesterday and we’re all off to start our winter break! It is quite a relief to put that first set of fundamental classes to rest. The quarter seemed to gradually crescendo to a humbling 3-hour “Quant” final, and wow, what an opus. Since we all started pre-term in early-September, jumped right into fall quarter, and have been going strong since, the holidays offer a pleasant distraction from studying.
As I write this post, I’m starting my vacation on a Virgin America Airbus320 headed to NYC. (In-flight Wi-Fi is great!) And yes, as San Diego temperatures climb to the high-70s F, I’ll be braving the freezing temperatures in New York. But it’s all worth it to celebrate a successful end of Quarter 1 of 6.
Thank you to the fall teaching team… Professors Proell, Clor-Proell, Lauga, Roemer, and Salovey!
Happy Holidays to all those reading!
